Apple activities for K-2 make it easy to connect science, literacy, math, writing, and hands-on learning during September and early fall. Apples give students something real to observe, describe, compare, measure, taste, read about, and investigate while practicing important academic skills.
This collection brings together some of my favorite apple science activities, literacy centers, writing ideas, fall math centers, and free printable activities for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.

Apple Activities for K-2 Across the Curriculum
An apple theme works especially well because one simple material can move across several parts of the school day. Students can observe apples during science, collect and graph data during math, build vocabulary, respond in writing, and practice literacy skills through seasonal centers.
These ideas can fit across a day, week, or even a month. Choose the activities that fit your standards and routines, then use the seasonal connection to make familiar learning feel fresh.
Start with Apple Observations
A simple apple observation area creates opportunities for science talk and writing before a formal lesson even begins. Set out several varieties of apples along with magnifying glasses if you have them. Students can record what they notice and what they wonder.
Those observations can lead naturally into questions such as:
- What do the different apples have in common?
- How are they different?
- Which apple is heavier?
- Will an apple sink or float?
- What can we find inside an apple?
- Which apple variety do students prefer?
Apple Science Activities and Investigations
Apple science is one of my favorite ways to use the theme because the investigations naturally connect observation, vocabulary, data collection, speaking, and writing.
The Apple Science activities can be completed one at a time across several days or combined into a larger apple science unit. Students keep their observations and discoveries together in an interactive apple book.

These activities work well during science lessons, but several can also move into writing, math, or an independent science center once students understand the routine.

Apple Taste Test and Five Senses
A taste test is an easy way to connect apple science with data and descriptive language. Compare red, yellow, and green apples and invite students to describe what they see, smell, feel, hear, and taste.
Students can vote for a favorite apple variety and turn the results into a class graph. The same experience then provides meaningful vocabulary for speaking and writing.
Apple Sink or Float
Before placing an apple in water, have students make a prediction and explain their thinking. Then test the apple, record the result, and discuss why the observation may or may not match the original prediction.
The learning comes from the thinking, conversation, and evidence, not simply discovering whether the apple sinks or floats.
