Free Groundhog Day Fact and Opinion Writing Lesson

I have been doing this lesson with my class for over a decade. Each year, it has evolved into a better version of itself, and I hope you enjoy it! Paired with terrific fiction and nonfiction books, plus informational videos on Groundhog Day, this lesson provides a way for students to use a fun topic to create an opinion writing piece.

First, begin with a lesson on facts and opinions. Use the following books and videos to establish some facts about Groundhog Day. This is important because students need to be able to form an opinion of something they know about. It is hard to develop an opinion when you don’t have much information.

Groundhog Day Books

Each book below is linked to Amazon (aff. links), or you can search for these gems in your school library. In the first group, you’ll find great facts about Groundhog Day.

Fiction Books About Groundhog Day

This next set of linked books are fiction books on the topic of Groundhogs. These are perfect for read alouds through the first week of February!

Videos for Kids for Groundhog Day

These videos are terrific for providing information on Groundhog Day. I love to create an anchor chart of learning immediately after the video. A way for students to take notes directly after viewing. Sometimes, on longer videos, we pause and record important facts. Please always preview videos before showing them to children. I am not responsible for these videos.
