Today’s classrooms have a wide range of ability levels and math development levels. Because of this, whole group math instruction is not an effective use of our students’ time.  Although we have worked hard to perfect our teaching craft, we simply cannot reach all of the levels of math development in the whole group setting.  In this post, we will look at lesson plans for the guided math structure.

 

LESSON PLANS FOR THE GUIDED MATH STRUCTURE

The core of the guided math structure is meeting with students in small groups for individualized instruction following a whole group mini-lesson. During this same time, classmates are authentically applying math content in workstations with partners, groups, and individually.

When taking on a new structure for learning, it is helpful to have lesson plans ready to go in that same structure.  Most if not all math adoptions still cater to the whole group math structure.  The teacher then takes on the burden of taking the content and creating the material for small group learning.  With Guided Math, the lessons are ready to go for math warm-ups, math mini-lessons, and small groups.

GUIDED MATH SOLUTION

Textbook curriculum and programs are not set up for the guided math structure.  These programs are set up for a one size fits all classroom.  Students sit in a passive role as the teacher demonstrates the math exploration.  For this reason, there is a disconnect between instruction and student mastery.  I am excited to share a solution for the guided math classroom grades K-5.
