As we head into spring, I am excited to share literacy activities for March that will cover the standards for kindergarten, first, and second grades! I am sharing example activities across the three grade levels in this post, but each grade level has it’s own unit bursting with literacy for March!
Literacy Activities for March
Let’s dive into all things literacy and check out the fun ways to engage students in learning! The purpose of the lit kit is to provide teacher with an all in one resource that covers the multitude of literacy standards in ways that teaching and learning fun! These kits come in kinder, first, and second grades!
The Lit Log
Let’s start with the literacy notebook! A literacy notebook provides a record of learning for ELA! Whether it is reading response, phonics application, story elements, or writing skills, the lit log can be your literacy companion in many different ways! Use it in a literacy rotation, as a reading response activity, or as a phonics follow-up! (examples below from K,1, & 2)
Here’s an example activity below. It’s perfect to put in a literacy center rotation for reading response, or to do as a class activity for responding to reading.
I Can Posters
For each grade level, there are I CAN posters to help you stay on track and post learning objectives.
Literacy Centers
Each lit kit K, 1, and 2, comes with 10 literacy centers. These literacy centers can be used in different ways. You can teach them as a mini-lesson at the rug to introduce new standards. You can use them in small group to enhance your guided reading instruction, or you can put them in independent literacy stations for students to work on during guided reading. (examples below from K,1, & 2)
This center is really like having three in one! Students write the correct vowel team on the word with dry erase marker.
For kindergarten, students sort by long and short vowel sounds when they say a word.
Second graders write the correct suffix after the root words
Centers for R-Controlled vowels
Readers must match the subject and verb to the prepositional phrase. Reading for meaning!
This is one of my favorite activities for second grade. Students can hear and see where the syllable segmentation is happening. Many times they don’t have it quite right! Plus it is fun to make up nonsense words too!
First grade and second grade get a handle on pronouns with these simple sentences.
It’s always fun to out smart the tricky leprechaun in March. Students unscramble the sight words!
Searching for compound words at the end of the rainbow too!
Sorting singular and plural nouns is also kind of a big deal in March.
Even kinders can do it! It’s never too early!
In this center, students work on homophones. Every year my firsties acted like they were a BIG DEAL because they knew what a homophone was.
Kinder recognizes and circles beginning and ending blends!
Kinder also matches up rhyming cvc words!
Story Elements and Teaching Posters
All three levels of the lit kit also come with teaching posters to help you teach the concepts that are included in that month’s lit kit! Use these posters in your mini-lessons and display them to help students anchor to the learning.

Comprehension
Stuck in a rut with comprehension questions during your guided reading groups?
Story clovers help you flawlessly integrate comprehension in both guided reading stories and read-aloud stories during your day. I mean sometimes pulling a clover can make answering a comprehension question just about the best part of the day. And let’s hear it for not having to think of another question to ask in reading response! Whew! It’s done and it’s adorably effective. Reading response is another big focus in the lit kit. No matter the story, there’s a reading response sheet that can be used in whole group or in a station activity. This makes responding to reading fun and seasonally engaging!
