After Building Math Community in second grade, we immediately dive into Place Value. This post shares effective and fun second grade place value activities in many engaging formats whether you need to add more to your teaching files or student stations.

Teaching Place Value in Second Grade

Place value is a fundamental concept in math, especially for second graders as it forms the foundation for understanding larger numbers and being able to add and subtract them with confidence and accuracy.

Understanding Number Magnitude

Place value helps students grasp the concept of larger numbers by breaking them down into more manageable parts. With place value being the basis of the decimal system, used universally in math, it is critical for math learning. Providing visuals supports learners who need to see, read, and process information over time. Vocabulary cards on a focus wall support the academic language of math.

Second Grade Place Value Unit Focus

While you can find the standards alignment for free in our Second Grade Scope and Sequence, we also provide teachers and parents a unit focus with the big picture of skills.

  • Read, write, and represent three-digit numbers in standard form, expanded form, and word form, using concrete or pictorial representations.
  • Use place value to compare and order whole numbers up to 999/1,200 using comparative language, numbers, and symbols.
  • Use an understanding of place value to determine the number that is 10 or 100 more or less than a given number up to 999/1,200.

Enhancing Confidence and Engagement

Mastering place value means providing learning through effective and fun activities, games, and lessons. When students have many opportunities to interact with the skills and concepts, they gain more and more confidence and refinement of understanding. This boost of confidence brings the enjoyment of math. While this may seem less important than drilling content, it is vital to cultivating a successful future of mathematical perseverance.

We want to love teaching as much as we want students to love learning so in all the second grade place value activities we create, that is our focus. How can I best teach both effective and fun second grade place value content?

While you may not need a full math curriculum, you’ll be able to find each component of our place value for second grade individually, or bundled for savings.
